Iran has been under US sanctions since 1979 and has gone through harsh economic crises as the world watched after the Cold-War ended.
On 24 November 2013, Iran signed a Geneva interim agreement known as Joint Plan of Action with the P5+1, which are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States; plus, Germany. A formal negotiation process began towards a ‘roadmap agreement’between Iran and the IAEA.
On 14 July 2015, Iran and P5+1 nations signed the historical the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Geneva. Basically, the agreement consisted of a short-term freeze of portions of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for decreased economic sanctions on Iran while these countries work towards a long-term agreement. This was the first agreement between the U.S and Iran in 34 years. JCPOA, the landmark agreement was intended to satisfy any concerns over Iran’s exclusively peaceful nuclear program and would help to relieve the inhumane and unjust sanctions against the ordinary people of Iran.
On 20 July 2015, the US and other signatories also jointly co-sponsored UN Security Council the resolution 2231 (2015) and endorsed the JCPOA. This marked the fundamental shift in the Iranian nuclear issue and initiated the desire to build a positive relationship with Iran by the implementation of the JCPOA.
On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, Trump administration unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA and reimposed sanctions targeting Iran. Trump’s remarks on JCPOA reflected his arrogance. This resulted in US sanctionsreverting to its pre-JCPOA position, in violation of UN resolution 2231.
Iran and the international community watched an extraordinary precedent when the US became the first government in UN history that not only violated a binding resolution that itself had sponsored but also stooped so low as to threaten and punish those governments and companies which continued to uphold international law by holding to and implementing the agreement as signed.
The Trump regime behaved like an international bully not just by imposing further sanctions but also by disrespecting and threatening the entire world for not following suit. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif sent a letter to UN Chief regarding the unlawful withdrawal of US from the JCPOA. Earlier, in 2019, Iran made a ‘substantial’ nuclear offer in return for US lifting sanctions.
Unfortunately, the US did notreceive it in a positive manner but instead continued to threaten Iran.
2020 witnessed further American aggression on Iran with the unleashing of atrocities in the region beginning with the killing of Major Qassim Soleimani and further violence in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and beyond.
At the same time the US continued withincreasing malevolent actions throughdisinformation campaigns against Iran while Iran was normalizing its defence cooperation with the world. This exposed America’s ruse indisguising the reality which was to collapse the resolution 2231 through the most brutal ‘maximum pressure’ on Iran.
Throughout the history of UN, it is evident now that US has used the UN for its own purposes and to destroy the international platform.
Today the international community watched theUN security council being bullied by US into torpedoing its own resolution. Simultaneously, the US unlawfully withdrew from WHO and thus threatened global and its own health and security.
It is important to note how American punitive sanctions worsen the pandemic in Iran. This is acrime against humanity while 4% of world’s population accounts for 25% of all Covid-19 cases. Iran has maintained resilience and opened its diplomatic arm to the world.
If the international community continues to maintain silence and particularly the UN itself on important decision such as JCPOA and its own resolution, this will only allow the law of the jungle to prevail and lead to non-confidence on UN. It will obliterate multilateralism and international law.
The onus is on international community as the world is in transition. Use the UN platform to isolate bullying nations who violate every agreement of the Security Council and disrespect the international community.
