On 5 February Pakistan observes “Kashmir Solidarity Day in Pakistan and throughout its diplomatic missions. Australian Pakistan Consulate in Sydney organized ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’ on 03 February.
Kashmir is under siege since August 05, 2019 when Indian state abrogated Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian constitution to make Kashmir a permanent territory within the Indian Union without prior consent or consultation with the people of Kashmir.
The program opened by Asst. Consular Ms. Saima Jameelfollowed a by video showing the situation in Kashmir. AFIC president Mr. Rateb Jneid, in his speech explained the historical background of dividing Kashmir by the colonial powers.
Australian Green Senator Hon. David Shoebridge compared Kashmir with the struggle of First Nation People and voiced for the self-determination of the people of Kashmir. He further said current situation in Ukraine and Kashmir.
Former Senator, Ms. Lee Rhiannon who has travelled that part of the world emotionally expressed her feelings for the people of Kashmir. She also said the recent marginalization of Muslim minority in India and recently banned the BBC documentary on PM Modi, a clear violation of ‘Freedom of Expression’ and media.
Another Green Senator Hon. Mahreen Faruqi compared Kashmir with current political situation in Pakistan andcrackdown on Press Freedom and media in Kashmir. She requested the International community to respond to the Human Right issues in Kashmir.
The High Commission of Pakistan His Excellency, Zahid Hafiz addressed the guest and highlighted the Pakistan’s position on Kashmir. His Excellency urged the international community to bring India accountable for its promise to hold plebiscite a promise by India’s first PM.
The program ended with note of thanks by Ms. Saima Jameelwho was also the MC for the event and dinner was served to the guests.
